Frequently asked questions

Can Heat Cloud be used with a traditional boiler?

Heat Cloud can be used with a traditional boiler as long as the flow temperature is kept below 50 Deg C using a thermostatic mixing valve on the manifold.

Can I use Heat Cloud on the ground floor and first floor?

Heat Cloud can be installed on any floor of the property giving you energy efficient heating and coverage throughout your home. If panels on lower floors are uninsulated they will provide additional heat to upper floors.

What type of ceiling system can Heat Cloud be fitted into?

Heat Cloud can be fitted into timber joist or timber/metal webbed joist ceilings using bespoke fixing brackets. The brackets are screwed direct to the joists and the panels drop straight onto the brackets. Alternatively, Heat Cloud can be fitted into metal furred (MF) ceilings using a special bracket that fits over the metal top-hat sections.

What happens if my installer doesn’t know how to fit Heat Cloud?

SPC can provide Heat Cloud training, advice and support to any installer giving them the understanding to be involved in your project and make it a success.

If we are using an air source heat pump, what sort of output will we get from Heat Cloud?

Heat Cloud will provide up to 130 W/m2 for heating and 80 W/m2 for cooling.

Can I use the Heat Cloud panels for cooling when my Heat Pump is in reverse cycle mode?

The same Heat Cloud panels can be used for cooling. Chilled water temperatures above 15°C should be used to avoid condensation. This provides a chilled ceiling which directly absorbs the heat radiating from people and surfaces in the room.

Can you zonally control Heat Cloud?

Controls for Heat Cloud are identical to underfloor heating. Manifolds, thermostats and sensors provide the most efficiently controlled heat emitters available.

Does Heat Cloud respond in the same manner as underfloor heating in terms of heat up and cool down times?

Heat Cloud is a rapid response system which takes approximately 5/10 minutes to heat the room to the required comfort temperature whereas underfloor heating is classed as a ‘long lag’ system which can take hours to provide heat into the room.

Can Heat Cloud panels be installed into an angled ceiling such as a wooden framed SIPs building?

Heat Cloud is suitable for installation in sloping ceilings and wooden framed buildings as the 45 Deg cone effect of radiant heat provide 100% coverage of the room across the ceiling and down the wall.

Can I access the product after installation?

We advise that all pipework and connections are run down one side of the room under a separate piece of plasterboard. Should access become necessary, this piece of plasterboard can be removed, replaced and skimmed.

Which types of plasterboard can be used with Heat Cloud?

Standard 10mm, 12mm and 15mm plasterboard is suitable to use with Heat Cloud along with graphite plasterboard which gives enhanced rates of heat output.

Which heat emitter is the most efficient for use with a heat pump?

With its very quick response times, lower air temperatures and minimal water content, Heat Cloud is the most energy efficient heat emitter available.

How long does it take to install Heat Cloud radiant panels compared to UFH?

Underfloor heating takes approx. 21 days from start until the screed is set. Heat Cloud takes approx. one day for a 5 bedroom house to be installed.

How much of the ceiling does Heat Cloud take up?

Typically, for new builds, 30 to 40% of the ceiling area is devoted to Heat Cloud panels. The ceiling height needed to install Heat Cloud is around 25mm.

I’m told that you can keep the air temperature lower on a radiant heating system?

CIBSE advise that when using radiant heating systems, the air temperature can be 3 degrees lower than that set for a conventional or UFH system while maintaining the same level of comfort. This provides a huge energy saving compared to UFH.

What is the highest temperature hot water you can run through Heat Cloud radiant panels?

The maximum recommended temperature is 50 Deg C so as to not affect the plasterboard.

Heat rises, so how can you use Heat Cloud radiant panels in the ceiling?

Hot air (not heat) rises as it is less dense than cold air. Heat is simply transferred from a higher to a lower temperature. Radiant heat is transferred through air without any losses and irradiates surfaces, heating them directly.
